Creme
de Blue is the alpacas' guard llama. Not all llamas are naturally
guards, but Blue possesses the qualities essential to this important job.
All the girls stand behind him for protection and all the boys want to be
just like him. Gentle with the babies, aware of all dangers, Blue
will let out a piercing alert call when a stray dog, or pigs (yes, we've
had the neighbor's pigs in our yard) are too close for his comfort.
Upon hearing this, all the alpacas run behind him until he feels the
danger is clear. We've even seen him on his hind legs, bending
the chain link fence down, to threaten a stray dog. Knowing he is in
charge gives us comfort in this area of high coyote population.
While visiting the Moonstone Ranch, you’ll also have
the experience of meeting our Rocky Mountain Horses. There are only about
7000 of these wonderful horses in the United States and we have two of
them. They are not only very people friendly, but they are smooth gaited
horses, making them a pleasure to ride.

One
of our newest members at Moonstone Ranch is Brayton the miniature donkey.
This little guy came to us in a bit of a mess, but with the proper nutrition,
veterinary care and lots of love, he has become happy and healthy. A
friendly little guy, Brayton is always looking for a new visitor to give him a
pet on his neck or a scratch on his back.
What would a ranch be without a border collie? Ours
is black and white and named Mr. Whitaker and he is serious about his
work. We just wish we had his abundant energy! Mr. Whitaker’s pal is Shyam, an Akita-Labrador mix. Together they make sure everyone is safe.
Xandi, Savita and Little Joe, the three cats in the
house, love to watch all of the activity outside through the many windows
of the two-story house.
